Model Context Protocol is a published standard for connecting AI assistants to other software. Rather than every tool needing its own custom link, a tool that supports MCP can offer a defined set of things an assistant may read or do, in a common format.
For a business, the important questions are about control. What exactly can the assistant see, can it change anything or only read, and who approved that? Sensible set-ups give an assistant the narrowest access that does the job, keep a log of what it did, and leave significant actions to a person.
