Telematics

Technology that collects data from vehicles and equipment, such as location, speed and fuel use, and sends it to a central system.

Telematics combines tracking devices and data connections to report on vehicles and machinery. Typical information includes position, journey times, idling, mileage and sometimes engine or fault data. A small device or the vehicle's own systems gather it, and a mobile connection sends it to the office, where it can be viewed on a map or in reports.

For a logistics or construction business, it can show where a vehicle is, help plan routes and support maintenance based on actual use. It also raises matters to handle properly: location data about drivers is personal data, so people should be told clearly what is collected and why, and its use should be proportionate.
